What are the sidebars in web design?

i'm used to doing design for flyers, postcards, logos, etc. I've never done design for a website, can anyone tell me what someone means when they refer to the sidebars being a width of 200 pixels? Does this just mean there should be a boarder of 200 pixels on the sides? thanks
