Im jus wondering if my ipod is broken?

my ipod wont change screens or anything is jus say ok to disconnect then when i hold menu n the middle on it changes then restore but when i plug it my ipod neva connect in so i can restore so do you think i should buy another one or take it to a shop it keeps freezing up and stuff like that when it did work.
