Anyone know if I can swap out a 1991 Cherokee XJ rear axel with a 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ axel?

I've got a 1994 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L YJ with a bad rear differential...I found a 1991 Cherokee XJ with the same model and gear ratio (Dana 35 with 3.55 gear ratio)...I'd like to replace the whole axel just so it's less work but don't know if the two are compatible. Distance from drum to drum looks good as does the model and gear ratio....as for the leaf spring bracket..it looks off by about 1 1/2 inches but I can have a buddy weld it in the right location. Anyone know if this would work or if there's something I should be looking for to determine if it will work?
